Rudolf Ebneth: Die österreichische Wochenschrift »Der Christliche Ständestaat«. Deutsche Emigration in Österreich 1933–1938.

The weekly periodical »Der Christliche Ständestaat« was founded by the Munich philosopher Dietrich von Hildebrand, who had fled to Austria in 1933. Published in Vienna, and written in an emphatically Christian-conservative spirit, it engaged in a fundamental theoretical and political critique of totalitarianism, especially as embodied by National Socialism. The journal received support from the Dollfuß government (though less from his successor Schuschnigg), since Der Christliche Ständestaat, like Dollfuß, opposed the notion of a union with Germany (Anschluß), which was widely favored in Austria at the time. Naturally enough, when the Anschluß came in 1938, it ended the publication’s existence. Rudolf Ebneth’s study also makes an important contribution to the history of German emigration, since members of the journal’s staff attempted to establish an all-inclusive organization of German Catholic emigrés.
