As a practicing journalist, scholar, and actor in media politics, Emil Dovifat (1890–1969) attained prominence particularly within German Catholicism. He was a founding father of the fledgling university discipline »newspaper studies« and played a decisive role in eventually broadening its scope to the more expansive »journalism studies.« After the Second World War, Dovifat was one of the founders of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the Free University in Berlin. In the 1950s, he helped mold the broadcasting landscape in the Federal Republic and pave the way for television.

Klaus-Ulrich Benedikt provides a comprehensive account of Dovifat’s achievements as a journalist, scholar, and media protagonist and his importance within German Catholicism. Benedikt also examines criticially Dovifat’s role in the Third Reich, when he served as director of Berlin’s Institute for Newspaper Studies.
