Körner, Hans-Michael: Staat und Kirche in Bayern 1886–1918, Mainz 1977
(Veröffentlichungen der Kommission für Zeitgeschichte, Reihe B: Forschungen, Bd. 20)
The relationship of state and church in Bavaria from 1886 to 1918 had previously not undergone comprehensive investigation. Accordingly, the chief mission of Hans-Michael Körner's study is to work through the available primary sources from state and church archives. In the process, he demonstrates the relative consistency of Bavarian church policies throughout the 19th century and up to the demise of the monarchy in 1918, the dependence of the state-church relationship on the general situation in the Reich and Bavaria, as well as the significance of church politics for the wider political developments in Bavaria.
