Hackel, Renate: Katholische Publizistik in der DDR 1945–1984, Mainz 1987
(Veröffentlichungen der Kommission für Zeitgeschichte, Reihe B: Forschungen, Bd. 45)
Catholic journalism leads a modest existence in the »real existing socialism« of the German Democratic Republic. At the same time, it does occupy a special position there: within given limits, Catholic journalism is not subject to the Socialist Unity Party’s (SED) censorship of content or influence in personnel matters. Renate Hackel’s discussion of the origins and evolution of Catholic journalism in the GDR, the religious line taken by church publications, and the selection of topics outlines the boundaries within which Catholic journalism can operate wihin a public communications network dominated by the SED.
